They’re not just video games… and Firefly!
They’re works of art! And to find out what I’m talking about, and to see a really cool video, follow this link, and see GameJew sing to Miyamoto!
As for me, it was a rather lazy and boring labor day holiday today! Just watched Firefly all afternoon and evening which, as a note, was fantastic!
I’d forgotten how much fun Firefly is, and how much I’m going to be sad when I get to the end of the movie, Serenity, and realise there is nothing more for me yet. So many fantastic one-liners, so many fantastic sub-plots and underlying moral-currents. Joss Whedon has just such an amazing gift for writing and creating entertaining and visually grabbing television it’s just so sad that he got pulled off (or let go or, whatever) the Wonder Woman movie.
As with several TV shows in recent years, they also managed to perfectly nail their characters from the beginning, something so many TV shows throughout history have failed to do. Perfect examples lie within the Star Trek franchise. One only has to watch Jonathon Frakes or Kate Mulgrew in season 1 episodes of their respective series to see how horribly wrong it can all go. But with Firefly, they managed to perfectly grasp the concepts of their characters.
From the beginning Summer Glau nailed River, and Nathan Fillion was flawless as the fearless Mal (check out Out of Gas to see a prime example of this). And the sheer brilliance that is River and Simon’s familial relationship is captured so wondefully time and time again throughout the entire run, short lived though it might have been.
I’ll stop for the moment - but don’t be surprised to see a similar epilogue on the rest of the series and the movie, all of which should be finished by this time tomorrow. :)
For the time being though, here are a few goodies to check out;
- Veronica Belmont’s personal coverage of South by South-West starts here
- A great article from Arstechnica on Fair Use
- And an interesting custody battle in the states, surrounding the mother of a child losing custody due to her religious links (the Church of the SubGenius). Sad to see someone go down that path, but nevertheless, it should not be a cause for removal of ones child simply based on a judges predjudice.
So maybe not goodies, but maybe more … forgot the word, damnit!
Cheers!
