100 Blog Topics #1: How I Use Facebook
It’s ironic that I address the first topic from Chris Brogan’s top 100 list that I mentioned a day or so back with a topic that is actually somewhat relevant and at hand in my life. I won’t kid myself (yet) and believe that I have a whole host of international readers (yet), so there’s a high likelihood that you’re part of the Mitcham crew. As such, you’ll be well aware of the Facebook plague sweeping through the church! It’s the new MySpace (at least, for the Mitchm-ites it is, for the rest of us, we know it’s been around for ages!) and they’ve taken to it with a vengeance.
In fact, there is no more dire fan of Facebook, in my opinion, than my good friend Megan! I am continually receiving drinks and other quizzes that I hastily slap away, intent on maintaining some semblance of dignity in my day to day online life. And yes, I am suggesting that Megan has derided herself of such dignity!
This brings me full circle round to how I actually use Facebook!
For me, like MySpace before it, it is nothing more than a place for me to keep in contact with people. My real life friends do not like, or have never heard of Twitter, or Pownce, and are unlikely to head out on a Web 2.0 binge anytime soon. I’ve only just found another Flickr user (Hi Sharon!) and Dave’s about the only one who would have two definitions for the word dig (ie, Digg). So I use the layman popularity of Facebook as a way to keep in contact with all my not so nerdy friends.
And, in all honesty, Facebook does just what I want it to do. There are no noisy flashy pages yelling at me for attention, and failing miserably as I hastily click the ‘back’ button. It’s all clean and uniform, unless you’ve piled your Facebook full of the different apps available to you.
I receive notifications in my email inbox of people who have written on my ‘wall’, and that allows me the opportunity to go and write on their walls.
In addition, I have initiated the Twitter and del.icio.us apps, so that my online activity - such as my updates through Twitter - are passed on to my non tech friends via the tech equivalent of a peace summit in Switzerland.
They did good when they opened it up to the rest of the world, did those Harvard boys’ and girls’, and I - along with all the other MySpace haters - thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
You can find me on Facebook as JoshSHill, as well as Twitter, Pownce, Skype and a variety of other locations.
