The Idiots Guide to the Internet…

web2-big-745097 I’m often presented with the fact that I am a nerd and/or geek amongst a crowd of, well, people who most definitely are not.

It’s not a bad thing, really… it’s a little frustrating at times… times when you feel you want to wring someone’s neck because they’re doing something the ‘oh so slow’ way. Or, more likely, is that they are spouting off on something they’ve no idea about.

And you know what, its that latter one that pisses me off the most. People dismiss new technologies often because they’re too stupid to understand them. Or too lazy to take the time to understand them. That’s the kicker… a special type of laziness that people will put in to practice, that, even though in the end, something will be easier for them, they’re too lazy to learn how.

But… *sigh* My obvious superior intelligence aside, and if we’re to do this, then you just have to accept the fact that I do know more than you, let’s look at a mini-series on how to use the internet to the best of your advantage.

I’ll be really blunt; this is going to be the dumbed down idiots guide. Many of my friends will willingly accept the fact that they know nothing to do with computers or the internet. My age-bracket is on the cusp of the computer age. Some of us were given the chance to learn them from a young age, and some weren’t. Not everyone had it as easy as you whipper-snippers these days!

So here’s what I’ll do. I’ll take it step by step, over a few weeks, looking at some of the more interesting, fun and useful things out there for the average Joe or Jo. Here’s a list of things that I’m thinking of covering;

- Flickr

- Twitter

- Facebook

- RSS Feeds

- Email

- Blogging

- Music

- Skype/VoIP

- Firefox

- Podcasts

- Online Documents

- Privacy

- Your Rights Online

I’m not sure of the schedule, or whether I’ll cover all of these, or whether this will be of any worth to people at all. I hope it will be, and I hope that you’ll come back and keep a track of this.

The internet has a lot to offer people, and people have a lot to be ignorant about. In fact, my recent reaffirmation of the fact that all humans are inherently moronic shines through in peoples lack of desire to learn. Learning, curiosity, discovery, is what being human is all about. To ignore that is simply naive and childish.

So step with me, in to the scary world that is the internet and Web 2.0, and we’ll see what happens. Also, if anyone wants to know of anything in particular, please feel free to comment below.

looks like a good idea, Josh… I’ll be interested to see what new insights you can bring to those listed above.
