California Fires and Climate Change: A Match Made in Hell

My latest article which has just gone live over at GO addresses the Californian Wildfires (or to us Aussies, bushfires…) and the how and why behind them. I want to explain something though. Something that needs to be said!

This is not another case of people trying to connect everything and sunder to global warming. It is however a simple fact that the Californian fires that have done so much damage to the landscape are a result of global warming.

How do we know this? Because global warming models predicted such a fire. Because the science - the factual science that all of our reasoning is based upon - points to this conclusion. And it is a logical scientific conclusion. Increased rainfall provides better growing conditions which, when struck by a sudden heat or dry spell, when ignited, go the proverbial KABOOM!

And these fires are the worst that many have ever seen. Why is this? Because global warming is getting worse. These models sadly do not just predict this current fire, but future fires that will wreak further havoc reliably over the next century if something is not done globally!

Sharon made an off the cuff remark to me Thursday night as she dropped me home after SG. Something along the lines of “Josh waging against the world!” Well, that’s what it feels like sometimes. So many people are so willing to go through life naive, ignorant, or simply opposed to the science of what is happening that it drives me crazy.

However, my mother will be the first to tell you, that I’m more than willing to rage against anyone who is stupid enough to stand in front of me. I have the facts and the evidence behind me…

In the meantime, check out this video that Megan was provided by a friend. It is truly amazing, and I’ll be covering it in a GO article this weekend.
