the culture of ownership

Molly Wood, from Cnet.com and their insanely popular podcast Buzz Out Loud, has finally gotten around to creating the long awaited Culture of Ownership website. As defined by the Urban Dictionary (a succinct description, OK’d by Molly, written by a BOL listener) describes the culture of ownership as thus;

The general feel in todays society that everything is somehow copyrighted or property of someone else to the point where it hinders creativity and makes it much more difficult to innovate. It is also the belief that just because you created/thought of something that you should have complete and total control over every aspect of that thing, object or idea.

So head along to CultureofOwnership.org, and keep track of just what it is all about, and watch as it crops up in society over and over again.

I agree and support Molly’s assertion that the Cult of Ownership can stifle innovation and creativity. However, as a creator, I also am keen to make sure that I have sufficient control over my work. This is especially true when it comes to people who try to profit from my labor.

I don’t care if millions of people copy and enjoy any product I make as long as I receive income commensurate with the value of my work. However, I think the battle between creators and consumers will continue as corporate greed attacks individual rights and common sense.
