at what time did today become "Good"?

When you are considering the list of days on the Christian calendar to label “Good,” the day that Jesus Christ died doesn’t necessarily jump out at you as the top contender. Yet it is the one we label “Good.” Why is that?

Well, according to Sharon’s Girls Brigade girls from awhile back, it is because while it may not have been a terribly wonderful time for Jesus, his sacrifice is good for us.

It’s a stereotypically selfish human way to label a day, focusing on what we’ve gotten out of it, but nevertheless, today, is Good Friday. And today, I’m going to ignore the semantics and etymology of the name and just focus on what is coming.

You see, Jesus’ death for me was always more than just him dying for my sins. That’s all good and well, right, but, it wasn’t just dying that needed to happen. For my punishment to be taken away from me, Hell had to be involved.

That’s what people seem to forget when they speak about the days that Jesus was in the tomb. His earthly body may have lain in the tomb, but his immortal soul - that part of God which has been and always will be - was split from God and entered hell to bare our punishment for us.

No wonder the rocks cracked, the skies darkened, and the Earth shook.

The very foundations of life - not human life - but the universal life that sparked the Big Bang, caused the planets to orbit and the stars to burn, was torn asunder and sent to Hell. That, my friends, is why I don’t celebrate Good Friday. Not because it is in any sense ‘Good,’ Jesus was still human - as he demonstrated when he asked of God for this cup to be taken from Him - and he would still have suffered amazing pain and suffering under Satan’s hands.

But come Sunday, my heart is all celebration because all that Satan had planned for Jesus was wrought undone. Yes, Good Friday is the catalyst for what was later good, but I’ll say this; let’s call it Easter Friday and Good Sunday.

So, for the 3 people who read this (Hi mum), Happy Easter, and may God be the focal point of your weekend.
